Machine Quilting and More

This class will give you all the basics for machine quilting!  There will be information on threads, batting, threads and more for good results on all your quilts.  We will be making small placemat size quilt samples using many stitches.  Many ideas will be covered to make your quilts very special.  Some of the stitches Susan uses are quilt doodles, fill stitches & some are border motifs.  We will also be using script as well.  If you want to make a tote bag purse from your sandwich there is a pattern available for purchase.  It will be a fun day of creative stitching!

Join Susan for a fun day of quilting!!!

 “Machine Quilting & More!”

Supply List

  • Sewing Machine in good working order and Slide on Tray (must be able to lower feed dogs)
  • BSS (Basic Sewing Supplies)
  • Walking Foot  (Bernina #50) (Dual Feed on Bernina’s is similar to a Walking Foot)
  • Free-Motion Foot (Bernina #9, #29, #15, or BSR)
  • Machine Quilting Needles (75/11)
  • Quilting Gloves (Atlas or Grab-a-roos are my favorites, but those are your choice)
  • 4-6 Fat quarters of solid color 100% cotton fabric plus a backing for each of these (could be prints for the backing)
  • 1 1/4 yd. 18” wide Dream Cotton Batting (you will need 3 or 4 18” x 22” pieces of the batting for the quilt sandwiches) I recommend Dream Cotton Batting in either Select or Request.  Dream Fusion is great too in this brand and it eliminates puckering and tucks on the back of the quilt! And this will be available for purchase during class.
  • Machine Quilting Threads to coordinate (colors such as blue fabric use green threads, not black on white) with your fabric for Sandwiches (Wonderfil, Konfetti or Tutti (50 wt.), Aurifil (40 Wt.) Mettler, King Tut, YLI or Oliver Twist) (No Signature, Star or Coats & Clarks)
  • Quilting Safety Pins
  • General’s Chalk Pencil in Gray, blue or pink/ or silver Prismacolor artist pencil
  • Plastic Quilting Templates (optional)

***Quilt Sandwiches:  These are layered with one fat Quarter on top, batting in the middle and one fat quarter on the bottom.  The bottom fabric can be a print, but the top needs to be a solid color, so you can see what you are stitching.  There will be more instructions in the class for this sandwich, but this is fine for the class.

**Please have your fabrics and batting cut before class as this takes precious time away from the class.

  • Minimum of 3 students required before class will happen
