Intro to Thread Painting - Goldfinch

Introduction to Thread Painting
No Quilting Experience Necessary

In this class you will learn basic thread painting techniques on a stationary machine by stitching a goldfinch! We will cover transferring an image onto fabric, thread stitching, stitching a realistic eye, basting, and blending colors.

MACHINE’S FREE MOTION SETUP. I CAN’T GUARANTEE THAT I’LL BE ABLE TO
TEACH YOU HOW TO SETUP YOUR MACHINE, AS THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT
STYLES AND BRANDS

Thread (I prefer polyester to cotton, prefer isacord 40wt)
Black,
yellow (one bright and one darker) for feathers,
orange for beak and shading
very light grey or white for feathers ,
dark brown for branch,
green (for leaves)
thread to match your background fabric
Saral Transfer paper (white)-I will provide this, but it is also available on Amazon
Ball point pen
8” or 11” embroidery hoop (wooden or plastic is fine)
White heat erasable pen or fine tipped chalk pencil (I will bring some if you can’t find
one
14x14 dark blue, green or black fabric for background
15x15 piece of flannel
16x16 piece of backing fabric
Quilt sandwich to practice on (preferably with flannel as the batting)
Reading glasses if you wear them
Applique scissors or thread snips
Quilting gloves
Sewing machine needles (size 90/14-I will bring extra organ needles if you need them)

Sewing machine, clean and in good repair, set up for free motion quilting with spring
action foot
6 bobbins-if you have a Bernina, one bobbin in black and one in yellow is fine
Sewing machine repair kit
-I will bring a pattern and reference photo for you
-we will be creating the goldfinch and stitching the background if time allows
