Bag Making 101

Basic Bag-making 101:

Do you have leftover strips or squares of fabric from a quilt project? Use your scraps to create
a handy personalized bag!
In this class we will install 2 pocket zippers, a metallic snap, bag handles, exterior pocket,
customized interior pockets and add an interior swivel clip to attach your keys for quick
access. We will learn how to create a custom bag to fit your occasion!
No pattern purchase necessary!
The finished size will be approximately, 10 x 12.
Use whatever fabric you have, for simplicity select colors that are similar in shade in order to
use one thread color. Don’t have any left over fabric you can use fabric of your choice. One
yard of each, two coordinating fabrics will be enough.

Supplies needed:
Sewing Machine
Bring an open toe foot, quarter inch foot and basic utility foot.
Fabric scissors, rotary blade and paper scissors
Portable iron and mat are helpful if you have them.
Wonder clip, pins, stiletto, marking pen
Rulers: a smaller and a medium size
Coordinating thread, size 90 quilting needle. (A denim needle may come in handy)
For the bag materials:
Fabric
2-12 inch zippers color your choice (By Annie zippers by the yard are great) (No metal teeth, we
will be cutting and sewing over the teeth.)
2-yards of one inching webbing.
For the zippers and webbing select colors that coordinate with your fabric.
1/2-yard Decor bond, 1 side fusible
1 1-1/2 inch swivel clip
1 metallic snap (I’ll provide this)

Homework:

To ensure you take home a competed bag you will need to complete the “quilting” of three
pieces and bring them to class.
2- 13 high by 17 wide
1- 6 high by 17 wide
You only need to quilt the top fabric and batting. DO NOT ADD the backing or interior to your
quilting. Do not trim to size, we will do that in class. Be sure to bring your extra fabric and one
yard interior fabric.
