Laura Heine Christmas In July Collage Class

LAURA HEINE CHRISTMAS COLLAGE

Instructor: Kelly Zellars, Certified Laura Heine Instructor. $60
One Class, July 17, 2025

READ PRE CLASS HOMEWORK BELOW

To do the Homework, you will need:

Pattern:
Choose pattern #10 or #3:
Teeny Tiny Collage Patterns #10: Santa, Snowman, or Reindeer, OR Teeny Tiny
Collage Patterns # 3: the Winter Bear. Teeny Tiny patterns provide 3 choices. All
Teeny Tiny patterns finish approximately 16” x 20.” All students must have their own
pattern. Students get a 10% discount on class materials.

Applique Pressing Sheet. Must be able to see through it. Laura Heine’s patterns list
2 brands. She also has her own brand. Gypsy Quilter also makes a nice see-through
pressing sheet in various sizes. Most patterns need a 17 x 24 mat but check your
pattern.

Steam a Seam 2 (SAS2) (not the LITE version). Bring at least 2 yards, 12” wide. If you
purchase the wider size, adjust the amount accordingly. Steam a Seam2 is the only
fusible that works for Laura’s type of collage quilts. Heat and Bond will not work.

Fabric: A variety of scraps or small pieces of floral fabrics (patterns suggest sizes and
number of fabrics but these are approximate). Include a few other designs such as
buttons, leaves, and vines.

Scissors: Bring sharp scissors. You can choose any scissors, but I find small or
medium scissors work best for making collages. Karen K Buckley medium scissors with
ridged blades make cutting easier. I also LOVE the small red curved Karen Buckley
scissors for cutting curved pieces.

Iron, ironing mat or pad (Shop also has 2 irons).

HOMEWORK PRE CLASS

*Check your pattern for size and cut the Pattern Ease to the size indicated on your
pattern. This is not the finished size. Most Teeny Tiny suggest cutting 19”x23”.

*I recommend you prepare some of your fabrics with SAS2 before class so you
can get more of your collage done during class. If you have questions, please
contact me and I will walk you through the pre classwork. If you just don’t have
time, don’t stress. You will still be able to start your collage.

Fuse a variety of fabrics with SAS2. SAS2 comes with directions. BUT use these
instructions which differ from the manufacturer’s version because of the collage method
of applique. Note, you are not tracing anything at this stage AND not cutting any
specific shape like Santa’s hat. The only cutting is choosing various sizes of fabric
and SAS2 you need for background pieces and the focus pieces.

For background fabrics Cut out some of the fabrics you want to use in background. I
recommend various sizes of squares/rectangles of your fabrics. You do not need to
choose or cut all background fabrics. Then cut out SAS2 squares and rectangles, that
match the size of the background fabrics you cut. For example, if you cut out a 4”
square of background, then cut something slightly smaller than 4” of SAS2. It is easier,
if you just approximate the size and cut so that it doesn’t reach all the way to the edge.
If it does, that’s okay but it’s easier if it doesn’t quite reach the edges.

SAS2 has a parchment type of paper on 2 sides. One side peals off easily and feels
very sticky. Peal off this one side and put sticky side on WRONG SIDE of fabric. Press
with your fingers. When you have it where you want it, lay fabric with right side on
ironing board. With hot iron, press where you just finger pressed. This still has
parchment paper on it. With NO STEAM, for 15-30 seconds, making sure you press all
parts of the SAS2 parchment paper that is still intact. Press with iron, lift, and press
new area, overlapping iron slightly with first area. When finished, let cool and move to
your next fabric. Avoid sliding iron back and forth because this often causes ripples to
appear on front of fabrics. Iron SAS to some background fabrics but you do not need to
do them all before class. Suggestion: Avoid letting iron touch any exposed SAS2. IF hot
iron touches the sticky side, it melts, creating a problem on your iron and ironing board.

For the focus of the pattern (e.g., Santa), you will want to cut a variety of fabrics. The
size depends on what you are focusing on. For example, the snowman cup can be one
larger piece or many pieces that blend together. The handle is a different and smaller
piece in my example. Iron SAS to some of these focus fabrics but you do not need to
put SAS2 on all before class.

Finally, if you know you have a particular fabric that you want to add to the collage
picture, such as the string of lights in the Santa pattern, attach SAS2. These are the last
things we add so do not worry if you don’t want to do this step yet. Again, in this
example, do not cut out the string of lights.

For the Workshop, Bring items listed above and

Fabrics: Bring additional background, focus fabrics (e.g, Santa’s clothes) with variety
of design sizes. A few solids or almost solids. Do not put SAS2 on these. Can be small.

Notions: Check the back of your pattern for additional supplies. Rotary cutter, ruler
(e.g., 6”, 12”), #2 dark pencil, fine Sharpie, a color pencil (pink, yellow, or white). Fabric
glue. I like Fabric Fusion but there are other quick drying brands. Important that the glue
can withstand heat and dry clear. Sold at SMF.

NO sewing machine required.

To finish at home, you will need binding and backing fabric, and light weight batting.
