March 1, 2024, 10:30 -4:00,  Hip Hop Collage Workshop(lunch break)

Level: All Levels Welcome.  I consider this collage a beginning/intermediate collage.

Do you want to try collage quilting? Do you have a stash of florals, leaves, or other spring fabrics waiting to create a collage?  Join me in this fun class to create your own unique collage.

Please Read about the New format:

PREP CLASS: I have broken this class into 2 days. The firstclass is a short but important 2 hour class designed to make your collage a success.  It covers best practices for picking your fabrics, preparing your collage fabrics for the workshop, and helpful notions. Homework will be assigned to get you ready for the workshop.

Collage Workshop:  In the second class, we create the collage in an all-day workshop.

Required Supplies for PREP CLASS, Feb 15, 2024

PATTERN: Hip Hop Rabbit by Laura Heine of Fiberworks. All students must have their own pattern. Purchase early to ensure availability. Seee notes below for adjustments I make in class…no voile is needed. Students get a 10% discount on all class materials.

Steam a Seam 2 (SAS2) (not the LITE version).  Bring at least 2 yards, 12” wide or equivalent.  SAS2 is the only fusible that works for Laura’s type of collage quilts. For the Prep Class, you only need 2 yards.  You will need more to complete the collagebut you can purchase additional amounts on the day of class.

Bunny Fabric:  Bring a variety of scraps or small pieces offabrics (for example, not larger than the bunny’s arm, leg, or ears). Floral fabrics or prints (e.g. plaids, dots etc). The best varieties include different size prints, large, medium, small, and almost solid.  See supply list.

Pattern Ease. We will be adjusting the original pattern to be consistent with Laura Heine’s newer techniques.  I will be handing out changes for this new version in class.  In this new version, No voile is required. Instead, you will need Pattern Ease, approximately 3/4 yard. Cut your background approximately 22” W x 32” H.  If needed, you can use low heatiron on pattern ease to get rid of sharp creases. Note, that we will cut this size down so try to get a nice cut but does not need to be perfect.

Marker Fine permanent marker (e.g. Micron) or other waterproof and heat proof marker. Needs to withstand iron and steam.  #2 pencil can also work but some find it smears.

Scisssors and RotaryCutter: Bring sharp scissors. You can choose any scissors, but I find small or medium scissors work best for making collages. Karen K Buckley medium scissors with ridged blades make cutting easier.  I also LOVE the small red curved Karen Buckley scissors for cutting curved pieces. Rotary cutter, ruler (e.g., 6”, 12” for background strips)

Applique pressing sheets or fusing mats.  Must be able to see through. You will find the medium and large sizes most convenient or Laura Heine patterns but any size is helpful

Iron, ironing mat or pad (Shop also has 2 irons but many students like to have one at their table)

Class #2: Supplies. Bring the Supplies listed for the Prep Class.  Also, bring:

Fabrics:  More colorful fabrics with small, medium, and larger motifs. A few solids or almost solids. These are in addition to what is referred to in Prep Class.  Do NOT fuse yet.

Background fabrics:  variety of lights and mediums (approximately 6” x 10”, see suggestions on back of pattern or wait until class), tone on tone or low contrast prints.  Do NOT FUSE prior to class.

Check the back of your pattern for additional supplies, especiallya color pencil (e.g., pink, yellow). Fabric glue. I like Fabric Fusion but there are other quick drying brands. Important that the glue can withstand heat and dry clear. Sold at SMF.

NO sewing machine required. I will demonstrate finishing techniques for home.  Binding, backing fabric, and binding (not needed for class).
