Instructor:  Kelly Zellars, Certified Laura Heine Instructor. $65

Session 1:  Saturday, October 19, 2024 , 10:30 - 12:30

Session 2: Saturday, November 2, 10:30 - 4:00

Required Supplies

PatternChoose pattern #10 or #3:

Teeny Tiny Collage Patterns #10:  Santa, Snowman,orReindeer.

Teeny Tiny Collage Patterns # 3: the Winter Bear.

Teeny Tiny patterns provide 3 choices.  All Teeny Tiny patterns finish approximately 16” x 20. Note that the sample size of my Santa is no longer available.

All students must have their own pattern. The snowman is probably the quickest design. The reindeer will require more background detail fabrics. Fun to hunt for but can take more time. Pick your pattern early to ensure availability. The store may need to order since many of these are popular, especially as the holidays approach.Students get a 10% discount on class materials.

Applique Pressing Sheet.  Must be able to see through it.  Laura Heine’s patterns list the brands, Precision Fusing Mat or the Goddess Applique Pressing Sheet.  Most patterns need a 17 x 24 mat but check your pattern.  Gypsy Quilter also makes a nice see through pressing sheet in various sizes.

Steam a Seam 2 (not the LITE version).  Bring at least 2 yards, 12” wide. If you purchase the wider size, adjust the amount accordingly. Steam a Seam2 is the only fusible that works for Laura’s type of collage quilts. For the PrepClass, you only need 2 yards. Do NOT attach SAS2 to any fabrics before class.  You may need more to complete the collage but wait until class to determine.

Fabric:  Bring a variety of scraps or small pieces of floral fabrics (patterns suggest sizes and number of fabrics but these are approximate).  Include a few other designs such as buttons, leaves, and vines.  It’s also fun to include prints that fit with your pattern choice such as small presentsThe best collages include different size prints, large, medium, small, and almost solid.

Scissors: Bring sharp scissors. You can choose any scissors, but I find small or medium scissors work best for making collages. Karen K Buckley medium scissors with ridged blades make cutting easier.  I also LOVE the small red curved Karen Buckley scissors for cutting curved pieces.

Iron, ironing mat or pad (Shop also has 2 irons but many students like to have one at their table)

Session 2: Collage Workshop, Winter Holidays

Do your Homework from the Prep Collage Session

ALL students should fuse a variety of fabrics with SAS2 as instructed in prep class. More variety and different scale of motifs is better.  Cut out at least 20 motifs.

If you did not cut your pattern ease to the pattern size in our prep class, do it before the collage workshop.

Collage Workshop

In this workshop, you will create your collage! I will teach you the Laura Heine techniques of blending colors, and the underlay methods. We will also cover preferred tools, needles, ironing and finishing techniques.  I will demonstrate several ways to finish your quilt to welcome spring.

Required Supplies for Workshop:  Bring the Supplies listed for the Prep Class and:

Fabrics:  More colorful fabrics with small, medium, and larger motifs. A few solids or almost solids. These are in addition to what is referred to in Prep Class.  Fusing prior to workshop is optional.

Background fabrics:  variety of lights and mediums (approximately 6” x 10”), tone on tone or low contrast prints.  I recommend not fusing these until class.

Check the back of your pattern for additional supplies. Rotary cutter, ruler (e.g., 6”, 12”), #2 dark pencil, fine Sharpie, a color pencil (pink, yellow, or white). Fabric glue. I like Fabric Fusion but there are other quick drying brands. Important that the glue can withstand heat and dry clear. Sold at SMF.

NO sewing machine required. BUT bring a hot iron and iron pad if you have one.

To finish at home, you will need binding and backing fabric, and light weight batting.
