Spring Collage Workshop - Hip Hop or Spool of Flowers

Pre Workshop Homework

ALL students should fuse a variety of fabrics. More  variety is better.   If you attended the optional Prep Class on February 10 (or March 9),  continue doing what we covered in the class. If you did not attend, you need to attach Steam a Seam 2 to a variety of floral fabrics or other motifs, small, medium, large.  Cut out some of the motifs.

Pattern Ease If needed, you can use a low iron on pattern ease to get rid of sharp creases. Does not need to be perfect! See pattern for amount. Then cut your pattern ease to size shown below:

Spool of Flowers: Cut Pattern Ease approximately 25”W x 26” H.

HIP HOP: Changes to HIP HOP Rabbit original pattern.  I will be handing out changes in this new version in class.  In this new version, No voile is required. Instead, you will need Pattern Ease, approximately, 3/4 yard. Cut your background approximately 22” W x 32” H.

Supplies for Workshop (Bring the Supplies listed for the Prep Class).  Also, bring:

Your pattern.

Fabrics:  More colorful fabrics with small, medium, and larger motifs. A few solids or almost solids. These are in addition to what is referred to in Prep Class.  Do NOT fuse yet.

Background fabrics:  variety of lights and mediums (approximately 6” x 10”), tone on tone or low contrast prints.  Do NOT FUSE prior to class.

Check the back of your pattern for additional supplies. Rotary cutter, ruler(e.g.,  6”, 12”), #2 dark pencil, a color pencil (pink, yellow, or white). Fabric glue. I like Fabric Fusion but there are other quick drying brands. Important that the glue can withstand heat and dry clear. Sold at SMF.

NO sewing machine required. BUT bring a hot iron and iron pad if you have one.

Binding, backing fabric, and binding (not needed for class).

OPTIONAL but recommended materials:  Applique pressing sheets or fusing mats are optional but very helpful for collage quilts.  Must be able to see through. You will find the medium and large sizes most convenient.

Tracing can be hard to see on a dark table.  If you have some, bring white freezer paper to use on the classroom tables. It can help!  I will bring some also.
