Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin Head

Get ready for Halloween!  Come join Kelly to create AND quilt these cute pumpkin heads.  Make Mr. Pumpkin Head OR Mrs. Pumpkin Head or both. They can be traditional or modern and as unique as you. If you are new to collage, we will teach you to use Steam a Seam2 and the Laura Heine underlay technique. If you have made a collage but wonder how to finish, we will practice quilting options. Since these collages are “Eeny Weeny”, we will have time to quilt them.  We will cover finishing options so you can take home your finished (or nearly finished) Halloween pumpkin head!

Every student must have their own pattern.  I am a certified Laura Heine instructor and I am required to honor all copyright law.

Choose  Mr. Pumpkin Head OR Mrs. Pumpkin Head (separate patterns).  Students get a 10% discount on all class materials so please choose early.  These patterns are popular!

Fabrics: See back of pattern for sizes; scraps can work.  Note backing fabric listed is for quilt without any borders or other finishing. Look at your Halloween or Fall fabrics for motifs to add to backgrounds. I used a bat from my border fabric.

Fabrics for the pumpkin heads:  The pumpkin head fabric is available at Sew Much Fun.  In class, instructor will  give each student one pumpkin head like the one shown in pattern.  Additional heads may be purchased if supply permits. Or you can make your own pumpkin head out of your favorite pumpkin fabric.

Binding, Border, and Backing fabrics—Depending how you plan to use your pumpkin head, this will vary.  The pattern only covers the collage (approximately 8”x 10” center). To make a small quilt similar to mine, a quarter yard will be plenty for the borders like mine. A quarter yard can make binding for 2 quilts. A ½ yard can make 2 backings.  Batting should be the size of your collage. I plan to use my pumpkin heads for pads on the back on my chairs.  If you plan to make your collage into a pillow, adjust your sashing size, backing, and batting size.

REQUIRED Notions: See back of pattern for pattern ease, Steam a Seam2, etc.

Transparent Applique Pressing Sheet REQUIRED. 12” x 12”  or larger.  Must be able to see through. You will find it is very handy on many applique quilts. SMF carries several sizes and styles. Check early or call the shop in case you need one  ordered.

#2 pencil.  I suggest one dark pencil and a colored chalk (pink, blue, or yellow) pencil if you have one. Dark pencils don’t show up if you are using dark fabrics.

Sewing machine in good working order with sharp needles and coordinating thread.

Sewing notions.  Pins, scissors, quality thread, rotary cutter and rotary mat (medium size).

OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED NOTIONS:  Karen K Buckley medium scissors (ridged blades make cutting easier) or similar scissors.  I also like the small red curved Karen Buckley scissors for cutting curved pieces.
