Tucker University - Freshman Year

Tucker University is a monthly series of fully designed technique classes for the Studio 180 Design Tools and Techniques by Deb Tucker. You may already own one and don’t remember how to use it!

This program offers you an exciting opportunity to build your skills and accuracy. In each Tucker University class, a new Studio 180 Design tool is taught each month. We only make 4” units so each month you can combine and create new blocks.

The Studio 180 Tools offer:

  • Each tool offers multiple sizes (one tool, many possibilities)
  • Blocks finish slightly oversized so you can easily trim each one to the perfect project size.
  • There are both left and right hand instructions.
  • There are laminated technique sheets for each tool that give you additional technique options available for purchase).
  • There are videos on line for additional help for every tool and technique.

Tucker University classes will build one upon the next. You don’t have to attend all of them but you just might be hooked after the first class. Here’s how the lessons will go:

  • You will cut and sew a few 4” blocks. Use the same collection of fabric and you will have a coordinated sampler when you’re finished.
  • There will be a laminated Design sheet available for purchase (if you haven't taken this class before) for class. This has cutting charts for more sizes, color planning aids and 20-30 more different block that can be made with the class tool.
  • You will also receive a black line design tool that you can use to photocopy and color as you plan your next project.
  • Students will receive 10% off the purchase of the tool and class supplies.

12 month series of Tucker University - Freshman Year

Month 1 - Tucker Trimmer and Shaded Four Patch

Learn how to use a Tucker Trimmer 1 to create half square triangles, quarter square triangles and combination units.  This one ruler can make three different units in 11 different sizes. Deb Tuckers method of making all blocks slightly oversized and trimming down to exact size creates perfect piecing. Tucker Trimmer is the perfect place for any quilter to begin their journey through the Studio 180 Design set of tools. Each month of Tucker University students will gain new techniques without the obligation of having to complete a full quilt top. We will be designing 4” finished units that can be combined with other units to make 8” or 12” finished blocks. We will also create a Shaded Four Patch block.

Month 1
Month 2 - V Block and Sidekick & High/Low

If you are seeing stars in your future then you have just found your new best friend, the V Block.  Making stars is not the only thing the V Block can do to improve your piecing techniques.  This month we will again make 4” blocks that can be combined with blocks from other months.  Connect a V Block with half square triangle and watch the curves develop.  The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.  We will also create Sidekick and High/Low blocks. You will amaze your quilting friends by thinking that you made a difficult unit.

Month 2

Month 3 - Wing Clipper 1 and Pickets & Quickets

This month we will learn the simple secrets to creating crisp, clean flying geese effectively and quickly. This method can be applied to any pattern that requires flying geese units.  Since you usually have to make hundreds of these units at a time, why not make them perfect every time.  Making blocks slightly oversized and trimming down will help you have perfect points on all your flying geese. This might be my favorite Deb Tucker ruler if I could ever pick a favorite.  I have used this ruler in many of our Block of the Month classes that required flying geese.  We will also be making Pickets and Quickets in this class.

Month 3

Month 4 - Square Squared and Little Houses

The Square Squared unit can be found within blocks as well as sashing.  Since this unit is often used to connect other units, the points are extremely valuable for the design to work without interruption.  You will save those points with the Square Squared tool. A secondary benefit to using Deb Tucker’s method is that you will not waste fabric.  This ruler will help you make many sizes of Square Squared units and squares in squares.  We will also be making Little Houses units in this class which can be used in borders and star blocks.
